Around the World by Marie-mail

Two pairs of shoes. A vial of Lactaid, my own coffee, and a stash of candy bars to substitute for the ubiquitous rat-on-a-stick in developing Asia. Leave the nail polish at home — vanity will have no place on this trip. Throw in some antibiotics and a map, and that's everything I need to go solo around the world without leaving the surface of the planet.

Using cargo ships, trains, buses, donkeys, camels and sailboats, I'm going to circumnavigate the world alone in 2001, without getting on a single airplane. Traveling by surface transport means I'll be visiting small untouristed villages instead of city-hopping along a set route.

Most people don't have the time or money for an extended trip. Now they can travel virtually, visiting every country on my route without a passport. Stay tuned, to see if I lose my cool as I face the daily challenge of hunting the perfect banana pancake and a semi-clean bed for the night. Visit Marie's World Tour Forum to advise me on my route, vote on major decisions, and give me an e-tongue lashing when I am culturally insensitive. See the world from the comfort of your home or office, for the price of your monthly internet access. Free if you sign on from work.
